Impacting Poverty via Economic Opportunity and Fair Housing Choice
There is significant evidence of minority segregation and correlating poverty across Montana. In Billings, Great Falls, Missoula and Helena, concentrations of minorities are only present in poverty-stricken neighborhoods. The overall goal of this project is to develop and implement a statewide plan to overcome barriers to housing choice and promote inclusivity. This will reduce concentrated poverty while improving access to: quality education; affordable housing; employment opportunities; and healthcare. Apply Now!
Montana Ready Communities
Montana experienced presidentially-declared natural disasters in 2011, 2012, and 2013 that resulted in extensive flooding and wildfires throughout the state; these adverse events affected 45 of the state’s 56 counties and disproportionately impacted low-income, rural, and tribal communities. The VISTA member will facilitate the creation of Montana’s Natural Disaster Framework, increase awareness of and engagement of communities to prepare for natural disasters, and research and create a centralized website for the Montana Ready Communities Initiative.
